Nathan Waks, Vigneron, Barossa Valley

Nathan Waks Vigneron Barossa Valley Story by Seppeltsfield

Is winemaking a scientific art or an artistic science? It’s an age old question that has troubled many but few are better placed to answer it than Nathan Waks.

While it’s hardly unusual for people to come to the wine world after successful careers in other fields Nathan’s career jump is more dramatic than most and it saw him leap from the concert hall stage and land feet first in good vineyard dirt.

As one of the world’s best cellists Nathan made beautiful music all over the globe, coaxing something truly special from a precious instrument with a significant history.

He’s still doing much the same now - it’s just the scenery is very different. As the man in charge of the historic and iconic Barossa property Seppeltsfield, Nathan is breathing new life into one of Australian wine’s sacred sites, restoring the old gravity flow winery back to working order after 35 dormant years and acting as custodian for one of the world’s great vinous treasures, an unbroken line of the famous fortified Para that stretches back to 1878.
