Maryann and Reg Egan, Winemaker, Yarra Valley

Maryann and Reg Egan Winemaker Yarra Valley Story by Wantirna Estate

Reg Egan wasn't content just drinking wines of the world, he decided that he should enter the world of wine by planting a vineyard. In 1963 Wantirna Estate began.

Living on a vineyard as a girl was not all that normal when you went to an inner Melbourne school. When Maryann Egan (Reg's daughter) told her career's advisor that she thought she might do wine science, he laughed it off as a slightly odd occupation for her.

Not to be put off, Maryann went on to get that Oenology degree and after wandering the world and working in various places, she came back home.

The wines are a joint effort between father and daughter. All are single vineyard wines, with the grapes grown on the four-hectare property. Still a family run affair, the grand-daughters too can be seen helping out from time to time.
