Darren De Bortoli Winemaker Riverina Story by De Bortoli Wines

Growing up in an Italian family was no big deal for Darren De Bortoli, but it was. Italian family values passed down by his grandfather, Vittorio still remain alive today.

Growing up in an Italian family was no big deal for Darren De Bortoli, but it was. Along with his siblings, his was a very Australian upbringing except for the food they ate. Salami and gnocchi might seem commonplace now, but back then it was exotic.

When Darren's grandfather started De Bortoli in Bilbul in 1928, he worked hard but believed in sharing good food and wine. Times were tough, but anyone was welcome to the family’s table. This culture of hard work and generosity of spirit continues today.

At home, Darren’s mother, Emeri, serves up fantastic meals to family, friends and visitors. Just like the early days there is always wine on the table and lively discussions.

As Darren says “Our grandfathers dream was to make wine part of everyday life, affordable and enjoyable to everyone. If he was alive today, he would be pretty pleased with himself”.
