Roman Bratasiuk, Winemaker, McLaren Vale

Roman Bratasiuk Winemaker McLaren Vale Story by Clarendon Hills

Meet Roman Bratasiuk. The larger-than-life vigneron who redefined Australia’s fine wine landscape when he began Clarendon Hills with nothing more than vision, a bucket and pair of secateurs.

In 1989, Roman Bratasiuk knocked on the door of a local grower. A warm friendship grew from a handshake and the following year, Ron was in the vineyard armed with a bucket and secateurs. His first vintage was superb and gained a fine reputation. Each year, the pragmatic vigneron was able to buy more buckets, barrels and eventually a shed to house his wine. International critics now consider him among the greatest winemakers in the world.

Clarendon Hills is built on Roman’s vision for the ultimate expression of vineyard and variety. Today he handcrafts 19 old vine, single vineyard wines from Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. With a background in biochemistry, Roman relies on a refined palate and innate vineyard knowledge. His Astralis Syrah is an icon on the international stage.
