Jason & Rebecca O'Dea Winegrower Cowra Story by Pig in the House

“Do those pigs still live in your house,” was a standard comment from the locals, recalls Pig in the House owner Jason O’Dea. “Some of the time,” comes the reply.

The O’Dea family have been in the Cowra region for over 50 years and in 1996, second generation vignerons Jason and Rebecca moved 20 free-range pigs out of the old 1880s house on one of the vineyards and moved in.

“You can pretty much imagine the state of the house when we moved in. The pigs certainly didn’t do too much cleaning up after themselves.”

After cleaning and renovating the old stone house, the 15-acre vineyard that surrounds the house came into their sights.

With the vineyard so close to the house and their young family, Jason and Rebecca ceased using chemicals in order to create a sustainable vineyard without negatively impacting the property.

With a lot of hard work, the vineyard gained organic accreditation, a theme which is now flowing through the Cowra and Canowindra region.
