Mark Walpole, Vigneron, Heathcote

Mark Walpole Vigneron Heathcote Story by Greenstone

Three men from different parts of the world but with a common interest - Australian wine. That is what Greenstone Vineyard in Heathcote is all about.

Alberto Antonini and David Gleave go back 30 years. Both made their living from Italian wine - David as an importer and Alberto as a winemaker. Yet, over the years, they both talked about the great allure of Australia and Australian wine.

The styles of wine, and the freedom to plant whatever variety you believe will work on your land was of great appeal. So when Australian Mark Walpole took Alberto to visit the Greenstone Vineyard site, Alberto rang David in London and that was all it took to set the wheels in motion.

They wanted to create a vineyard with a difference. Their goal was to produce grapes and wine that were unique, while expressing regionality.

The initial excitement of the three remains undiminished and is vindicated in the quality of the first wines to come from the vineyard.
