Stephen Henschke, Winemaker, Barossa Valley

Stephen Henschke Winemaker Barossa Valley Story by Henschke

Stephen Henschke's a hot air balloon pilot and when he’s not up to his armpits in red wine fermenters, he loves flying over the incredible grandeur of the Barossa Valley.

Stephen follows in the footsteps of five generations of Henschke winemakers. Like his ancestors, he has deep respect for this land which produces international, award-winning wines such as the Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone Shiraz.

The best view of these vines, some planted over 150 years ago, is from the air.

Stephen can sometimes spot his viticulturist wife Prue working her magic in the vineyards.

This is a true partnership. After meeting as students of winemaking and botany, they’ve become one of the most admired duos in the wine industry.

Their three children, Johann, Justine and Andreas, are set to become the sixth generation of Henschke’s to make wine in SA.

Their passion for making wine is matched by their passion for vineyards and they’ve long been working towards total sustainability using organic and biodynamic principals.

They see themselves treading lightly on the land – or flying over it!
