A year ago while working in the Pierro vineyard, foreman Grant McLoughlin stumbled upon 13 bottles of unlabelled wine lying in on the edge of the Willyabrup River, covered in mud.
It is still unknown how the bottles got there - they were possibly stolen but Grant gathered up the bottles and went back to the winery.
They were very dirty with no label to identify them. Grant opened the first bottle and the cork revealed it was a 1999 Pierro. After tasting it, Grant and the team at Pierro, including winemaker Mike Peterkin, identified the wine as Chardonnay.
The first wine was heat damaged, however the second bottle - after being covered in mud and left in a paddock for 10 years - was tasting pretty good. The team at Pierro have opened a few more since and half of the bottles are amazing.
Their advice to wine collectors? If you don't have a cellar, maybe consider gathering some mud and storing your wine by the river.
