Kim Chalmers, Winegrower, Heathcote

Kim Chalmers Winegrower Heathcote Story by Chalmers

What happens when you cross a composer with a grapegrower and a conservationist? Kim combines her three passions in a career that blurs the lines between art, wine and nature.

Kim grew up playing piano, guitar and saxophone but was determined from a young age to become a composer. After achieving a degree in music composition she began her career as an academic at Elder Conservatorium.

After living in Italy in 2003/4 playing saxophone concerts, composing and falling in love with Italian culture, Kim returned to the family business and hasn't looked back, becoming manager of the Chalmers wine label producing wines from heat and drought tolerant southern-Italian varieties.

In 2006, Kim trained with Al Gore as a Climate Project presenter and continues to be involved in working to educate and prepare Australian winegrowers for climate change through alternative varieties and sustainable practices.

Kim creates performance art about climate change, conservation projects in the vineyard, is wine sponsor for artsmildura, writes music in response to wine instead of tasting notes and uses vineyard sounds in her compositions. A happy synergy.
