Story by Margan
The Fordwich Sill is a geologically distinct piece of soil that was created 20 million years ago. This soil today grows some of the most distinctive grapes within the Hunter.
The Fordwich Sill is a special piece of volcanic soil that rests over limestone that grows grapes of fuller body and richness than the other soil types of the Lower Hunter Valley.
This distinct area of soil was mainly planted out by Lindemans and Saxonavale in the early 70s. Margan Family Wines took over these old vines during the mid-90s and with much love and care have nursed these vineyards back into the shape they need them.
The grapes from these old vines are the essence of the Margan style. The pervading Hunter Valley climate strongly influences the flavour profile and structure of our wines but the soil provides a point of difference. Broader softer semillon, rich textured verdelho, rich, soft shiraz, varietal cabernet.... these are distinctive Hunter wines with a touch more ripeness and softness than the average Hunter.
