Ian and Merralea Scarborough, Winemaker, Hunter

Ian and Merralea Scarborough Winemaker Hunter Story by Scarborough Wine Co.

What do you get when you find a damsel in distress, a classic vintage Holden and a spritely young trainee winemaker?

The Scarborough Wine Co. partnership was formed when a young Merralea broke down and in distress waved to an approaching vehicle near Gawler. Little did she know, two trainee winemakers with big futures had come to her rescue. Driving the Holden was Ian Scarborough with good mate Phillip Shaw.

From that point on, Ian and Merralea set about creating a future within the Australian Wine Industry and with over 20 years experience in the Hunter Valley, in 1990 the Scarborough Wine Co. brand was launched.

The Scarborough Wine Co.’s wine styles are largely determined by their unique Gillard’s Rd property, with one of the highest elevations in the Hunter Valley, the rich terra rossa soil creates the full flavoured Scarborough Chardonnay which everyone loves.
