The origins of Poonawatta Estate date back to the 1800s, when the pioneer Ferdinand Vorwek established a mixed farm in 1860, and planted the original Shiraz vines in 1880.
In 1966, the Holt family purchased the Poonawatta property and became proud custodians of the remaining two acres of 1880 Shiraz vines. It is one of the oldest Shiraz vineyards in Australia and from these amazing vines Poonawatta’s flagship wine, The 1880 Shiraz, is produced.
Andrew & Michelle Holt established the Poonawatta Estate label in 2002, driven by a passion for hand-crafted wines, a love of the Eden Valley and a commitment to environmental sustainability.
The Poonawatta vineyards are managed organically, with a philosophy scaling from block to row to single vine - particularly the 1880 vines, where all 912 vines are managed individually.
The Cuttings Shiraz and The Eden Riesling complete the estate portfolio, with the single vineyard philosophy extending to the rest of the Poonawatta wines sourced from premium vineyards across the four corners of Eden Valley.
