The historic town of Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills - Adelaide's oldest surviving German settlement - features a small and innovative winery with a deliciously Teutonic point of difference.
The boutique Hahndorf Hill Winery is the only vineyard in Australia to produce wine made from the German/Austrian red grapes, Blaufränkisch and Trollinger.
It's also become one of the first Australian wineries to produce wine from the fashionable Austrian white grape, Grüner Veltliner.
Winegrower Larry Jacobs says it's all about keeping abreast of new trends and changing consumer tastes.
Larry uses his Blaufränkisch grapes to create an acclaimed "new wave" red, while his Grüner Veltliner grapes produce a vibrant white that he predicts will become a "signature wine" of the region.
Larry believes that what truly distinguishes the Adelaide Hills as a wine producing region is its significant diurnal variation of temperature.
The high altitude of the Adelaide Hills results in warm days and cold nights, and it is this difference in the day and night temperatures (the diurnal variation) that enables world-class Grüner Veltliner to be produced.
