In the 1970s, eccentrics went everywhere to replicate the famous wines of Europe. Ken and Juliet Eckersley chose eastern Victoria, with its maritime climate and alluvial soils.
What started as a hobby and dream has grown to making eight wines a year of between 50-300 cases, each from 20 acres of vines.
They defy the elements to grow flavoursome grapes, craft and bottle the wines to sell at their cellar door and via mail order.
The personal touch at every stage produces wines that Ken and Juliet believe are different and exciting. From barrel fermented Riesling to delicate Pinots and spicy, peppery Shiraz.
These are not your dominant Australian wines and there's no chance of mass production.
They find it satisfying to look at a bin of freshly bottled and labelled red wine that has been three years in the making.
The irony is that despite their beginnings, the outcome is an expression of themselves through their wines.
Their partnership and determination made this possible - although they've had to learn the virtue of patience.
