Story by Bassham Vineyards
Returning Great War Digger begins a multi-generational viticultural odyssey.
For services to his country Grandpa Bassham was given “a block”, 40 acres, of prime Riverland scrub. He cleared the land and planted vines; Doradillo for Brandy, Sultanas for drying.
His son, Albert James Bassham, “Jim” to friends and family, took over after he returned from the Second World War, business was good, the vineyard thrived and fishing in the Murray filled in any spare time.
Grandson Bruce Bassham joined the partnership full-time as soon as school allowed him to. Times changed and demand for Doradillo fell. Young and daring, he planted the then little-known Chardonnay. Young he may have been, lucky he was: the Chardonnay a great success.
Lately, the wheel has turned again: older and hopefully just as prescient they've planted the little-known Montepulciano and Vermentino. Oh, and they farm them organically too. Now that’s something else Grandpa Bassham wouldn’t have foreseen. Where will the journey end?
