Paul Bruce, Vigneron, Alpine Valleys

Paul Bruce Vigneron Alpine Valleys Story by Grange of Everton

The old house Paul and Pat Bruce fell in love with in 1983 retained few markers of its former grand status - but a dilapidated cellar gave a clue.

The Grange at Everton is situated on the north-western edge of the Alpine Valleys wine region, wedged between the Beechworth and King Valley regions. When the Bruce family arrived, there was no history or notoriety attached to the building - although there were clear pointers to a more prestigious past than a simple farm house.

Among the clues was an old cellar of generous proportions, and a little research soon showed the property was originally Tarrawingee station, the homestead of which, The Grange, was built in 1839 and had been home to Sir Francis Murphy and Dr George Mackay amongst others. Mackay had made his own wine at the Grange but the cellar was the only trace of this, with the vineyards long gone. In the mid 1990s, grapevines returned to The Grange and the refurbished cellar is lined once again with bottles and barrels of fine local wine.
