Duke Ranson, Vigneron, Great Southern

Duke Ranson Vigneron Great Southern Story by Duke's Vineyard

Who else would plant the first vine in a new vineyard on his 60th birthday? Now over 70, Duke Ranson's still enthusiastic about making the best wines in the world!

Born a country boy who spent many years in the city, Duke realised a long held "dream" by planting a brand new vineyard in a stunning location at the foot of the ancient Porongurup Ranges. The first vine was planted with great ceremony on his 60th birthday.

Duke's idea of "retirement" includes doing all the hands-on vineyard work, with the help of one other off-sider. No economic downturn or wine glut can dampen his enthusiasm for the next fantastic vintage. In June, you will find Duke pruning, which usually takes about 100 days of crisp, cool Porongurup mornings where he can put in place his conviction that a great wine is made in the vineyard and his wines are going to be the "best in the world". Anyway, where else could he put his sheep?
