Alex MacKenzie, Winemaker, Clare Valley

Alex MacKenzie Winemaker Clare Valley Story by Annie's Lane

Alex developed an affection for Clare following regular visits to his grandparents. An exchange program with a family in the Rhone Valley cemented his dream to become a winemaker.

Alex spent a year backpacking through France
appreciating the Gallic respect for fine food and wine. He began to develop a love for sampling grapes from
different regions and varieties, matching food and wine, and aiming to improve his discerning palate.

Alex completed Viticulture at University of Adelaide’s Waite Campus amd he immediately headed to Tain L’Hermitage to work a vintage at Maison M. Chapoutier.

Eager to explore and employ new styles, Alex spent a season in Piedmont where he was exposed to the production of Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto. He has also worked at Castello di Gabbiano in Chianti, working closely with Sangiovese.

Alex lives with his wife, young son, Pascal, and his antique 1948 Italian coffee machine. He has a fond interest in food and wine integration, establishing the ‘Taste of Frontiers’, which involves a series of food and wine matching activities with regional winemakers.
