Colin Kay, Winemaker, McLaren Vale

Colin Kay Winemaker McLaren Vale Story by Kay Brothers Amery Vineyard

In 1966, 38 years before Che Guevara’s motor cycle diaries were published - Colin Kay was also keeping a meticulous account of his journey across Northern and Latin America.

Not exactly the serious BMW R1150GS of McGregor and Boorman fame, Colin's tiny Honda CB160, the smallest motorbike you could legally ride on the highway, faithfully puttered across Canada and 40 states of the USA.

The then 26 year old, born and bred at Amery Vineyard in McLaren Vale, purchased this stellar piece of machinery in San Francisco and commenced a journey that would see him chased up a tree by a brown bear in the Yukon, spend a month on a fishing trawler in Alaska and most memborably sitting in a diner near Memphis with a stack of hot cakes, listening to a radio as the assassination of Martin Luther King was announced. Colin headed home in 1969 aboard the Achille Lauro and the third generation Kay Brothers winemaker met his future wife Ruth. 40 years on, they still live on the property and Colin is still chief winemaker!
