Riverland Alternative Wine Group Winegrower Riverland Story by Riverland Alternative Wine Group

The Riverland’s growers are a determined bunch. Fighting for survival when times are tough and tastes have changed some have become pioneers in the hope of shaping the region’s future.

Driving from Loxton to Renmark you will sometimes witness a not unusual, but for some still mysterious site: a pair of the Riverland’s emblematic pelicans, soaring high above the river.

They pelicans sometimes fly a couple of hundred metres off the ground and look so small in the distance. Why do they fly so high, can they see fish from up there or is riding the thermals pelican recreation?

Driving on; you will discover some vineyards, in particular some with Vermentino, an Itialian white grape variety.

How does it perform in the Riverland, you might ask? A tasting of the first vintage suggests that they’re onto a winner: zesty and fresh with a crisp dry finish.

The mystery of Vermentino’s future isn’t solved yet but perhaps it could set the Riverland’s reputation soaring. Soaring as high as its pelicans.
