Andrew Wigan lists Colin Preece of legendary Great Western fame as his mentor. Colin's encouragment led Andrew to follow his heart and palate into the world of winemaking .
The Roseworthy trained winemaker came to the Barossa joining Peter Lehmann at Saltram in 1976, a decision he describes as “the best he ever made.”
Using the intimate knowledge of Barossa vineyards gained whilst working with Peter, Andrew was a key member of the team which created Lehmann's flagship wine; Stonewell Shiraz which won the prestigious Jimmy Watson trophy with the 1989 vintage.
With experience learnt from over 30 Barossa vintages ‘Wig’ is one of Australia’s best-known and highly decorated winemakers. In 2003 and 2006 he collected trophies for International Winemaker of the Year and Australian Producer of the Year at the IWSC, White Winemaker of the Year at the 2006 IWC, and won the coveted AGT Wine Magazine ‘Winemaker of the Year’ in 2009.
Whilst his family, the Barossa, and its wines are his first passions, the Essendon Aussie Rules football team holds a special place in his heart.
