When architect John Andrews stopped gallivanting around the world, he retired to Central New South Wales and established a vineyard specialising in Sangiovese with his son Jamie.
John Andrews was a maverick on the international architecture stage. The gruff, rugged Australian designed some of the most cutting-edge buildings in Canada, North America and Australia from the 1960s to the late 1980s including Toronto's CN Tower and Gund Hall at Harvard University in Massachusetts (pictured).
In the mid 90s, John and his youngest son Jamie established Hamiltons Bluff Vineyard in Canowindra in the beautiful Central Ranges of NSW. "Hamilton" is a family name and "Bluff" an indication of the bold front father and son were showing by following their hearts into the wine industry!
Jamie, who inherited his father's distaste for the ordinary, was keen to find an alternative grape variety for the vineyard and ultimately planted 5.5ha of Sangiovese.
A smart choice, Hamiltons Bluff's Sangiovese wines are now a fine example of how well the variety can perform in a warmer climate Australian wine region.
