Murray Tyrrell, Winemaker, Hunter

Murray Tyrrell Winemaker Hunter Story by Tyrrell's Wines

Murray Tyrrell AM discovered chardonnay in the Burgundy wines he enjoyed in the 1960s. When they became too expensive, he started growing and making chardonnay to rival the French.

Murray was ultimately responsible for Australia’s first commercial chardonnay, the iconic Vat 47, and he never let an obstacle get in his way, as evidenced by his famous fence leap to 'liberate' a neighbour's chardonnay plantings when the request 'to borrow some' was not met!

Hunter Valley centric, Tyrrell's flagship Vat 1 Semillon has won more trophies and gold than any other Australian white wine, and its impeccable record with cellaring is known throughout the fine wine drinking world.

Australian family owned since 1858, Tyrrell's have been based on their Hunter vineyard in the lee of the Brokenback Range for two thirds of Australia's modern history. Currently being run by the fourth generation, Bruce Tyrrell AM, the baton will be passed onto his winemaking son Chris in years to come, who is a sure bet to ensure Tyrrell's standing as one of the most awarded wineries in Australia
