Despite over 140 years of family ownership, it’s the passion for the vineyards that motivates fifth generation Ben Thomson in his role as custodian of Best’s Great Western Vineyards.
The Thomson family bought Best’s Great Western in 1920 to add to their vast vineyard presence in the Great Western region. From 1892 – 1900, the acreage steadily increased and established the Thomson’s as one of Victoria’s great wine families.
Now, more than 140 years later, Best’s Great Western is in the hands of the fifth generation Ben Thomson who is the Managing Director and Vineyard Manager having worked in the family business for over twenty years. Ben’s passion to maintain the historical vineyards, many dating back to the 1860s, is what sets him apart.
Ben has a passion for the land and a fascination with applying new viticultural and harvesting techniques. You’ll often find Ben driving the tractors throughout the Best’s regional vineyards, tending to the vines and researching some of the more unique varietals planted. He’s also a keen water skier throughout the summer months.
