PJ Charteris, Winemaker, Hunter

PJ Charteris Winemaker Hunter Story by Brokenwood Wines

Born in NZ, PJ started pruning vineyards with his Dad at 13 - and hasn't stopped since! From his Trans-Tasman beginnings, PJ is undoubtedly now one of Australia's favourite sons.

PJ carved his winemaking path over 25 years in various Australian regions, navigating his way to the Hunter Valley where he discovered Semillon. His first vintage in the Hunter was in 1990, which ignited his passion for the region and drew him back repeatedly, until he found a permanent fit at Brokenwood Wines in 1999.

Now, with a decade under his belt as winemaker, his understanding and love of the valley is evident to all, and perhaps is best expressed through the revered Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz, which has held its "Excellence" ranking by the Langtons Classification for over 10 years.

Beyond excelling as a winemaker, and captaining the pourers at the annual Len Evan's Tutorial, PJ also presides over the legendary Brokenwood 'dorm' during vintage - organising guest chefs, impromptu 'options' sessions and ensuring that the crema on the espresso is of barista-standard throughout the crush!
