Wayne Ahrens, Vigneron, Barossa Valley

Wayne Ahrens Vigneron Barossa Valley Story by smallfry wines

At only 17 years Wayne Ahrens bought his first vineyard, but with a family history going back to first settlement in the region, this shouldn't come as a big surprise.

Since the beginning of settlement in the Barossa Valley there has been Ahrens' farming in the Vine Vale district.

Wayne's great, great grandfather arrived in January 1837 on the 'South Australia' and took up 200 acres in Vine Vale. This is a history as long as the ancient Mataro vine in the picture!

The Ahrens family's heritage and generations of experience are part of what makes the Barossa great, being custodians of a diverse range of magnificent old vine material.

At Smallfry Biodynamic farming and natural winemaking based on wild yeast ferments and the barest minimum of inputs allows the ancestor vines to sing with their purest voice.

Whilst the family plans to continue growing, Smallfry Wines has other ideas as the name suggests - small practice, hands on winemaking, wines to share with others.
