Propellers, pruning and prowess. With three Victoria Cross recipients having lived within 15 minutes of this vineyard, it's little surprise the wines are winning awards as well.
Named in honour of Lt. Col. LC Maygar, local pastoralist and recipient of the Victoria Cross (highest military award for valour "in the face of the enemy"), Maygars Hill vineyard and cottage are situated in the Strathbogie foothills, just 1.5 hours drive from Melbourne.
Small in size but big in stature, this little vineyard of 2 acres of cabernet and 4 of shiraz, was named in honour of the brave farmer and soldier, Maygar, who was tragically killed at the Battle of Beersheba, Oct 1917, never to return to his precious home in the Strathbogies.
Today you can fly in to the airstrip and over-night at 'Maygar's Cottage' nestled amongst the vines, and join the owners in toasting the Lieutenant Colonel's bravery with his namesake wines.
