He's the man who put Margaret River Chardonnay on the map! Now Bob Cartwright has 'tacked' away from what used to be home, taking the helm at Knee Deep Wines.
After 28 vintages at Leeuwin Estate, Bob decided it was time for a change and set about creating a 'racy' chardonnay for Knee Deep in Margaret River.
Established in 2000 by Dr Philip and Sue Childs, the vineyard shares its name with Phil's yacht. The very same boat, which as 'Yendys', won the handicap first place in the Sydney to Hobart back in December 1999.
Winemaking and yacht racing may seem worlds apart but Bob believes that the key to a good Chardonnay is the work put into the vineyard, row direction, soil quality and careful oak selection.
Phil believes the secret to a good race is the effort put into training, wind direction, wind quality and having the right equipment.
Both require a dedicated team and during vintage or a long race neither is getting any sleep!
