Phil and Viv Snowden
Vigneron
Great Southern
Story by Singlefile Estate
"What's good for the goose is good for the gander!” thought Phil and Viv Snowden when their attention turned toward making wine in Western Australia’s Great Southern region.
Nestled in the beautiful Denmark area the vineyard sits under clear blue sky, surrounded by a tangle of majestic karri forest. The property, with its north and northwest facing slopes and two permanent water courses, hosts plantings of 25-year old chardonnay, merlot and shiraz, plus a resident flock of geese.
Most days the familiar silhouettes of geese can be seen waddling toward the lake in ‘single file’, gathering to calmly watch the vineyard workers as they finish for the day.
The site has striking soils and near perfect climate for viticultural pursuits, with some even comparing the area to France’s Burgundy region, while acknowledging that the key difference is Burgundy’s colder winters. This comparison has inspired the Snowden’s to plan Pinot Noir plantings, and they are now looking forward to sharing their wines with wine lovers.
