Bob Richter, Vigneron, Tasmania

Bob Richter Vigneron Tasmania Story by Grey Sands Vineyard

Unsure if his future should be in dentistry or on the land, three years travelling around Europe convinced Bob to swap his 'pearly whites' for tannin stained teeth in Tasmania.

Bob's passion for producing wines came from his travels in Europe, and when he met Rita (of Italian background) their decision to develop a cool climate vineyard was confirmed.

After completing his winemaking studies at Roseworthy they relocated to Tasmania and found a site whose grey sands, slope and aspect seemed perfect.

You might wonder why grey sands were preferred over fertile soils, but the best vines often struggle to gain the nutrients they need, and developing a root system that navigates its way to where moisture can be found, often results in additional complexity in the fruit off the vine.

As with healthy teeth, great vines are only ever as good as the roots below, and daily care ensures a lifetime of pleasure and enjoyment.
