Josef Chromy, Vigneron, Tasmania

Josef Chromy Vigneron Tasmania Story by Josef Chromy Wines

It’s the end of WW2, your country is occupied and you decide to escape. Where is it that in 50 years you have an Order of Australia Medal? Tasmania Naturally!

Joe on his Arial motorbike 2 weeks prior to escaping occupied Czechoslovakia (1950) could not have imagined he would become one of the most influential figures of the Tasmanian Wine Industry.

Escaping across borders guarded by minefields, dogs and soldiers; suffering five months of privation Joe immigrated to Australia.

Arriving in Tasmania-aged 20, penniless and unable to speak English; his first job cutting asbestos by hand was a means to an end.

Josef Chromy OAM is now recognized for his commitment and contribution to quality food and wine in Tasmania. As one of Australia’s cool climate regions, delivering outstanding Pinot, Chardonnay and Sparkling wine, Joe is often asked why all his investments have remained in Tasmania. His response, “I came here with nothing but hope and ambition over 50 years ago. Tasmanians welcomed me and, with their help, I have been rewarded for the challenges and risks I have taken”.
