Pokolbin Reds
Winemaker
Hunter
Story by Hunter
If you happen to visit the Hunter Valley on a Saturday in Winter don’t expect to see many winemaker’s at cellar doors. Most will be rolling around in the mud.
The Pokolbin Reds Rugby Club were formed in the mid 2000’s and automatically attracted most of the Valley’s sportier winemakers. And some are maybe a little less so.
What started as one team in the local competition has grown to two strong senior teams and a junior squad filled with famous names and representing the next generation of Hunter stalwarts.
On any given weekend the likes of Andrew Margan, Chris Tyrrell, Usher Tinkler, Rhys Eather, Mike De Iullis, Damien Stevens, PJ Charteris and Stuart Horden will be packing down in to scrums and putting their finely tuned noses in places they shouldn’t really go.
Those that aren’t playing can generally be found cheering from the sidelines, offering mostly unhelpful advice and making sure there’s plenty of perfectly chilled Semillon waiting for after the final whistle.
